Why enroll in an American Italic Workshop?
In the digital era, where texts can be endlessly reproduced and wander limitlessly in cyberspace, paper and pen preserve the fragile beauty of what is not replicable. Handwriting is the realm of unique and unrepeatable singularities. Writing a simple note becomes an act of rebellion, a claim of uniqueness. By holding a pen, we expose ourselves to the risk of loss and embrace the certainty of never again. And this decision, which rebels against the mechanism of seriality, corresponds to true luxury: the luxury of reliving as many lives as those we write.
Besides the romantic aspect that appeals to anyone who loves handwriting, there is also a practical side: writing allows us to rediscover creativity, realign the mind and body through the slowness of gestures and concentration.
Why do we talk about Handwriting and not Calligraphy?
Calligraphy is the art of writing beautifully, but handwriting is the graphic rendering of words and individual letters
In everyday use, both terms overlap, becoming synonymous, and that's how we end up talking about beautiful or ugly calligraphy rather than handwriting. We prefer to preserve the true meaning of the original word and train ourselves to write beautifully by improving our handwriting.
What will we learn?
We will discuss handwriting, calligraphy, and writing.
The American Cursive derives from the Spencerian style, but it does not incorporate the shading and embellishments. Instead, it is a monoline style, making it ideal for everyday writing with a pen. It originated in the United States between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the aim of facilitating correspondence in the commercial and banking sectors. In these fields, it was necessary to have a universally understandable, fast, precise, and yet elegant handwriting
We will not write with a fountain pen; we do not want to skip steps. We will write with a ballpoint or roller pen, simple but effective, to see immediately how our handwriting improves.
